Our team was engaged by the City of Des Moines to deliver project management, structural engineering, environmental permitting, and construction management services for the restoration of a storm-damaged boardwalk along Poverty Bay\u2019s southern shoreline. This half-mile boardwalk had sustained significant winter storm damage, with numerous deck planks broken or dislodged and several steel support elements compromised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The repair of the Redondo Boardwalk involved restoring structural integrity, replacing girders, stringers, brackets, decking, and ADA-compliant curb ramps. Approximately one-third of the funding was sourced from the FHWA Emergency Relief Program, necessitating an accelerated design and construction timeline that adhered to stringent environmental regulations. Our team completed all permitting and environmental compliance tasks\u2014such as the compensatory mitigation plan, Hydraulic Project Approval, and Section 10 Permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers\u2014on schedule and within budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our design balanced flexibility with site-specific geometric constraints to ensure the superstructure\u2019s resilience to future storms or seismic activity. Additionally, the boardwalk features aesthetic touches, with concrete decking precast in wood-grain textures to mimic timber, stained to replicate cedar\u2019s color, and treated with a UV-resistant coating for enhanced durability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
